Some of my favorite things to do include watching campy movies, hanging out with friends, Tweeting, and drinking. My brilliant friend SJ figured out a way to do all of them at once when she invented the Drinkalong.
It all started with Puttin’ the Blog in Balrog when SJ started a group to join her in reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. As part of the project, she invited everyone to join her in livetweeting the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies. We watched one disc each week and she provided a list of rules for which we would drink–things like closeups of the ring, homoerotic subtext between Frodo and Sam, whenever Merry or Pippin provided comic relief, etc.
We logged into TweetChat and followed along, flooding our followers with drunken tweets about LotR. It was a blast. More than once, we would have random followers join us halfway through and aid us in razzing the movies, sharing related memes, and getting tipsy. As a result, we shared many laughs, made new friends, and created countless inside jokes (I for one will never again see the Eye of Sauron as anything but giant flaming vagina).
It took us several weeks to get through Lord of the Rings, but when it was over, we were all a little bummed, so SJ has taken it upon herself to set up one movie event a month to keep it going. For September we did Monty Python and the Holy Grail with a smaller group, but it was just as much fun. One of the highlights was me spilling bourbon on my MacBook. (Fear not; the MacBook was fine, but the loss of bourbon was regrettable.) Most of us who participated admit to having spoken the lines along with the movie.
If you’d like to see what I’m talking about here are the Storifys of several of the events:
We’re still trying to decide what movie to watch next, but it looks like it will be on October 26th. Follow Snobbery if you want to stay posted on future events.
